Support worker for a non-verbal teen with autism

Job Description

Our family is seeking a passionate and reliable, support worker /behaviour interventionist/SLP assistant to work with our energetic 15 year old, non-verbal son with Autism Spectrum Disorder. We are seeking a candidate for a long-term, stable working relationship to join our great team and work together and under the support and supervision of a group of confident professionals.

2-hour sessions 2-3 days per week (5ish -7ish pm) are needed : 2 sessions during the week ( mon, wed and /or Thur) an other session on the weekend is welcome but not a must . Extra sessions are preferred during the summer and school holidays.

-Sessions are conducted as community outings, driving and access to a reliable vehicle is a must.

Qualifications:
*Please only apply if you have all of the following!

-Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in Childhood Education,Special Education,Psychology, Linguistics, or another field related to developmental disabilities.

-1-2 years direct work experience with youth or adults with autism.
-Demonstrated capacity to build warm, caring relationships people with disabilities.
-Playful, creative interaction style.
-An excellent command of English.
-Ability to work independently and reliably with minimal supervision.
– experience supporting youth/adults with challenging behaviours including meltdown outbursts and self-injury.
– Ability to run fast if needed, as our son tends to bolt.

Requirements:
Regular reporting to the youth’s parents, and assigned professional regarding the progress of the intervention strategies.
Open to, and able to act on continuous performance feedback in order to improve outcome for child
Commitment of at least a year of work with family.

Additional Requirements:
-Non-violent crisis intervention, Mandt training or an equivalent is highly preferred but not a must.
– Competent swimmer and confident to take our child on swimming outings, highly preferred but not a must.
– Knowedge/experience in AAC is also an asset as our child uses touchchat to communicate. If not training will be provided.

this is an excellent position for an educational assistant or full time BI wanting after school/evening extra hours
Pay: $25- 30/hr, depending on experience and qualifications.
