Senior Support Worker

Job Description

Depends on Experience.

UBC / Point Grey Area

We will provide a more formal job description and compensation details prior to hiring.Looking for a full-time support worker / EA / youth care worker / BI to support a teen in the family home and community. Some assistance to the teen’s older sibling or parent may be required.

The teen is friendly and enjoys chatting and sharing interests, such as computer programming, social justice, tabletop adventure games, video games, sports, minor hikes, animals and music. We are open to learning about you and your own interests.

Someone who can also help with activities of daily living, such as pitching in for meal preparation, cleaning up, managing groceries, receiving packages, helping with laundry, making appointments, supporting medical appointments…if you have ever wanted the glamour of a personal assistant for people who aren’t rich and famous, now’s your chance! But the key here is to model household responsibilities to the teens, encourage them to take part, and show that these are things that are not unique to women/Mom.

We are looking for someone experienced with autism, complex needs, complex trauma and mental health challenges, de-escalation, crisis intervention and domestic violence. We welcome applications from people with lived experience. A high level of comfort with social justice issues is critical as this is a topic of interest and you will need to be affirming of human rights, women’s rights (are human rights), BLM, LGBTQ+, Truth & Reconciliation, inclusion, accessibility and more.

While we will be working within an ABA framework, we do not require ABA experience and may actually do better with someone who isn’t experienced with it! This role is a bit more like counselling and support work., but there will be a well-known BCBA team supervising and training. We are looking for someone who is flexible, friendly, able to work in a variety of settings and contexts, and who isn’t rigid in how they approach things.

You also need to be able to flex into supporting the teen’s online learning (distributed learning) / home learning goals. The teen has complex needs and is enrolled in academic coursework. It would be fantastic if you have experience supporting English, math, programming, science and other subjects. That being said, if you know how to learn, are good at searching for online videos, and are flexible, that may work too. We are expecting to bring in some additional support for key subjects. But, if you happen to know any programming languages, the teen would be thrilled.

This position is part of a team and there will be a lot of overlap, so that this role is sometimes 2:1, sometimes 1:1 with the parent working from home, and, when you’re ready and things are working well, there may be times when it is 1:1.

3+ years of experience with complex care as a senior support worker, education assistant, school support worker, youth care worker, psychiatric facility worker, or similar role
Experience and/or training in Mandt (preferred) or crisis intervention
Driver’s license & clear abstract
CRC for vulnerable populations
Experience with FoodSafe meal preparation & food allergy management (or a high degree of diligence)
Grade 12

FoodSafe preferred
First Aid preferred
Post-secondary, preferably a bachelors degree

This is a full-time role. While we are currently looking to staff Monday to Friday during the day, we are looking for someone who could be flexible around some evenings and weekends and sometimes providing respite.

Why this role?
Other people who’ve worked for us describe us as cool, funny, progressive, flexible, fun, smart and caring. We tend to write great references and many of our past workers have gone on to start companies and get into grad/professional school. We also do a lot of advocacy and see the change for this family and non-profit as more than just one story. If you want to be part of the change, this may be the role for you.

Please apply with a resume and preferably your CRC to skylaunchsociety@gmail.com.
