Behaviour Interventionist Needed

Job Description

Experienced Behaviour Interventionist/Community Inclusion/Respite Support Worker needed for 20 year old non-verbal woman diagnosed as Autistic with Cri du Chat Syndrome.

2-3 shifts per week totalling 18-20 hours per week at $27 per hour for qualified candidates.

Training specific to Autism and behaviour challenges, as well as experience developing nonverbal communication systems is a requirement. The chosen candidate will be responsible for directly implementing behaviour and skill building plans of their own design and will not be working with the family in an advisory role. In addition, only female applicants will be considered by the family due to the need to assist with toileting. A valid driver’s license or access to a vehicle is not necessary. A valid first aid certificate and a vulnerable sectors criminal record check will be expected during the hiring process. Students in relevant academic or skills programs are welcome to apply.

S lives at home with her family and requires a skilled worker to take her out into the community for activities 3 days per week most weeks, but with an alternative schedule of 2 days and 1 evening shift as needed. For example, a typical schedule could be Tuesday 10am-4pm, Thursday 10am-4pm, and Saturday 10am-4pm, but with sufficient notice the schedule could change to Tuesday 10am-4pm, Thursday 10am-4pm, and Saturday 5pm-12am, to allow her parents a night out of the house. Scheduling is flexible and negotiable and applicants are encouraged to share their availability in detail in their cover letter.

S experiences high emotional variability and can be oppositional at times. However, most of the time she’s in a happy and playful mood and is very affectionate.

S requires assistance expanding her communication systems (picture cues and signs).

S also experiences frequent, though brief, panic attacks due to sensory processing challenges.

S wears diapers and requires toileting assistance due to balance, fine motor, and behaviour challenges/dynamics.

S also often drools and needs reminders and assistance to stay dry.

Much of the time S is very happy, funny and affectionate with her friends and family.

S is an intelligent person with a complicated personality that masks and interferes with her ability to show what she knows.

S is very fun-motivated and can demand a lot of attention, so she is best matched with a support worker that has enjoyed working with young children in the past.

S loves music and making noise of all kinds and would love to spend time with someone that enjoys singing and/or plays a musical instrument.

Experience with physical therapy and occupational therapy is an asset.

S will be losing access to her primary support worker of several years and needs to find a replacement that can commit to at least one year with her

Please submit your resume as soon as possible. We are hoping to begin shadow training shifts on the week of July 20th, but will postpone the start date for the best candidate if necessary.
