24 Hour Weekend Respite Worker for Fun Loving Man and His Dog

Job Description

HOURS REQUIRED: 5 – 24 hour shifts on Saturday/Sunday each month at workers home

REPORT TO: Cynthia Thompson, Mom

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
MUST be comfortable accompanying Raven during and after seizures (additional specific training provided)
Ability to physically assist Raven in some seizure and/or post-seizure situations (5’10”, 170lbs)
Skill in respectfully supporting people whose capacity to communicate varies throughout the day
Skill in exchanging with people on a variety of potentially unfiltered topics
Have a wide range of interests and recreational experiences
Be compassionate, reliable and easy going
Have common sense, respectful values and a sense of humor
Have basic comfort and knowledge of overseeing care for Raven’s Seizure Alert Dog (Additional Seizure Response dog training to be provided)

REQUIREMENTS:
Current Basic First Aid Certificate that includes C.P.R.
Criminal Record Check from the Ministry of Justice
All standard vaccines including Hepatitis B
Drivers license
Current Driver’s Abstract from ICBC (no charge when requested by contractor)
Pre-employment medical assessment

ADDITIONAL:
Community Support Worker Certificate / Long Term Care Aid Certificate or equivalent experience
If contractor has a vehicle:
Safe vehicle in good running order
Business Vehicle Insurance $3M third party liability

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment includes the respite provider’s home, community and surrounding area.

JOB SUMMARY:
Provide 24-48 hour support to Raven. Oversee Raven’s care of his dog Boots. Ensure Raven’s well being and promote his development in a manner which respects Raven’s right to choice. Work with Raven to develop activities that encourage the development of his physical, social and emotional abilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Ensuring that Raven takes his twice daily medications
Administration of medication in specific seizure situations as per provided training
Responding during the night when Boots alerts for seizures
Ensuring Raven’s safety in his surroundings (avoiding stairs, windows, sharp edges, etc.)
Encourage and oversee daily and weekly dog care tasks
Assist to express thoughts and internal experiences
Accompany and support Raven in his daily activities

SALARY: $240/24 hours
